Leading provider of data privacy and governance software recognized for “Data Discovery and Management”
WASHINGTON, DC – September 8, 2022 — ActiveNav, a leading data privacy and governance software provider, announced that for the second year it has been recognized in several of Gartner’s prestigious Hype Cycles. Gartner Hype Cycles are a graphical depiction of a common pattern that arises with each new technology innovation across its lifecycle that provides end users insights about which technologies to invest in.
Under the category of “Data Discovery and Management,” ActiveNav has been named to:
ActiveNav is identified as a sample vendor to evaluate an organization’s Data Discovery and Management (DDM) needs, which Gartner previously referred to as “File Analysis”. According to the Gartner reports, DDM solutions (like ActiveNav) allow organizations to reduce their risk, categorize important data, optimize storage efficiency, improve the ways they manage their data, and lower costs.
“We are excited that ActiveNav’s innovative technologies have received these acknowledgements from Gartner,” said Peter Baumann, ActiveNav CEO and Co-Founder. “Being named to these Gartner Hype Cycles in 2022 is a recognition of the ways that ActiveNav helps organizations find, protect, and manage their data defensibly for more than a decade.”
Unstructured data, which makes up 80% of an organization’s data, represents a significant and growing challenge for security and privacy professionals. The situation is further complicated by the patchwork of regulations and laws around the world and across the United States, according to Baumann.
“Organizations of all types face enormous pressures when it comes to managing their privacy and security needs, particularly around unstructured data,” he said. “We are proud that ActiveNav has been recognized by Gartner to help address these ongoing and evolving challenges.”
Privacy and security remain top of mind for companies as they manage cyber and IT risks, and the Gartner reports represent one powerful way for security and privacy professionals to identify partners that can help manage these ongoing challenges.
According to the Gartner Hype Cycle for Privacy, 2022, “Security and risk management leaders can use this Hype Cycle to prioritize strategic investments that shift the focus from compliance to competitive differentiation.” The Hype Cycle for Security Operations, 2022 noted: “The entries included in this Hype Cycle aim to help security and risk management leaders strategize and deliver effective response and remediation.” ActiveNav Cloud is used to map, classify, and manage sensitive data at scale. Its always-on, single-pane-of-glass visualization provides companies with a low-cost, high-performance solution to monitor and score sensitive data.
“ActiveNav Cloud is a vital tool in our organization’s journey of determining the age and the risk scores of our accumulated unstructured data,” said Ruvilyn Gatchalian, Electronic Records Advisor for Canada’s Black Gold School Division. “It helps us be in compliance with record and information regulations and sustain leaner document, records and information repositories.”
The report on privacy, authored by Gartner analysts Bernard Woo and Bart Willemsen, notes “Privacy remains a top priority in managing cyber and IT risk as modern regulations continue to impact the processing of personal data.” This is particularly true as new regulations impact the ways that personal data is used. Privacy matters cut across all areas of an organization, and those who oversee privacy must approach their work in a multidisciplinary way to encourage awareness and compliance. New technologies, such as ActiveNav Cloud, are emerging that address both the need for privacy and business benefits.
According to Gartner, “Organizations are reaching a tipping point in the uncontrolled storage and licensing costs associated with unmanaged data, across the utilization of on-premises, hybrid and cloud infrastructures and applications.” DDM solutions such as ActiveNav’s highly scalable cloud service can offer several ways to manage these issues, including reduced risk from locating, protecting, eliminating and quarantining sensitive data, as well as identifying access permission issues. These tools also allow organizations to optimize storage efficiency, which leads to actionable insights and better data management. They also save money through improving storage and decreasing business risk.
The report on the Hype Cycle for Security Operations, authored by analyst Michael Hoeck, points to the continuing usage of mobile devices and cloud services, as well as the ongoing adoption of remote work, as reasons why organizations must remain vigilant about tracking the risks and threats to a wider number of digital assets. As digital business functions and third-party-managed assets expand, security and risk management leaders need to reconsider the ways that their business-critical environments change security strategy and tools.
When it comes to security operations, DDM tools allow organizations to discover, analyze, index, search, track, and report on sources of both unstructured and structured data. This increases regulatory compliance, risk management, storage management and data analytics capabilities within organizations. ActiveNav’s quickly deployable cloud software can be used to achieve these goals, including creating data visualization maps that better help to identify the value and risk of the unstructured data, including the owners of the data.
Since 2008, enterprises, governments and SLEDs (state, local and education government agencies) have come to rely on ActiveNav’s solutions to identify sensitive data, optimize storage, and comply with privacy regulations.
