In recognition of the Australian Government's Privacy Awareness Week - which this year "...calls to ‘power up’ on privacy..." with a focus on the key principles of transparency, accountability and security - we wanted to provide a quick roundup of some of our favorite privacy advice. Following on from the UK's General Data Protection Regulation as the first comprehensive consumer privacy legislation in the US, we start with an overview of the changes in California Consumer Privacy Act.

This report, conducted by Osterman Research, looks at current compliance with the original California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and how organizations are approaching compliance for the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), the updated and extended privacy legislation covering data on California residents.

Gartner annually produces Hype Cycle reports across a wide range of technology areas. Gartner Hype Cycles provide a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption of technologies and applications, and how they are potentially relevant to solving real business problems and exploiting new opportunities. In its 2023 Hype Cycle for Privacy, Gartner identifies how “Data Discovery solutions improve organizations’ ability to manage ever-expanding repositories of structured and unstructured data in on-premises, hybrid and cloud infrastructures. They increase visibility of disparate and unorganized sources of information. They enable compliance teams to improve insight into policy adherence and sensitive information, including personal data (PD); and enable security teams to improve visibility of sources of data access risk.”

You can find the report here.

In this podcast, Rich Hale, our CTO discusses Data Security and Compliance with Adam Turteltaub, of The Compliance & Ethics Blog. Among other things, Rich addresses the key need for identifying what data an organization has and the justification for holding it, including understanding where the data is being used.
