How to Create a Data Inventory for Your Federal Data Strategy

Policy mandates and directives such as M-19-21 and the Federal Data Strategy guide federal agencies to become better stewards of citizen data.

Agencies are now tasked with the onerous technical challenges of data migration, security, protection, and governance, all with limited resources. To be able to give visibility to your data and deliver on mission goals, you need to know what data you have, which is why the Federal Data Strategy lists creating “An Inventory of Data Assets” numerous times in its 2021 Action Plan.

However, building a data inventory is not a “one and done” event – rather, it’s a continual process that needs to be automatically updated to meet changing goals.
